Review: Take Me On by Katie McGarry

Title: Take Me On
Author: Katie McGarry
Publisher: HarlequinTEEN
Publication Date: 5.27.2014
Pages: 544
Genre: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult, Issues
Series: Pushing the Limits #4
Source: Finished copy from publisher

Rating: 4 Stars

Summary (from Goodreads):
Champion kickboxer Haley swore she'd never set foot in the ring again after one tragic night. But then the guy she can't stop thinking about accepts a mixed martial arts fight in her honor. Suddenly, Haley has to train West Young. All attitude, West is everything Haley promised herself she'd stay away from. Yet he won't last five seconds in the ring without her help.

West is keeping a big secret from Haley. About who he really is. But helping her-fighting for her-is a shot at redemption. Especially since it's his fault his family is falling apart. He can't change the past, but maybe he can change Haley's future.

Hayley and West have agreed to keep their relationship strictly in the ring. But as an unexpected bond forms between them and attraction mocks their best intentions, they'll face their darkest fears and discover love is worth fighting for.

Review:
It's like the year simply doesn't work without a Katie McGarry book in my life. Over nearly 3 years, she has become one of my absolute favorite authors, and I love owning every single one of her books in multiple formats. With TAKE ME ON, McGarry is back in full force with Rachel's bad boy brother, West.

West definitely caught my attention in Crash Into You. I loved him and was drawn to him, so getting the chance to see how his mind really worked in TAKE ME ON was fantastic. He's loyal and stubborn as hell, but he has a habit of carrying around the weight of the world on his shoulders while laughing it off to everyone else.

Enter Haley, a girl with more issues than Us Weekly, who sees through his BS and bravado. Haley, who has her own scars and demons and issues, but these two somehow find a balance and solace with each other.

I breezed through this book, absolutely loving every second of it. But when I finished, I realized I still had some questions. A lot of loose ends that didn't make sense and were never fully resolved. Sometimes they felt like random moments that served as unnecessary fillers. There were a few extra characters that just felt out of place and if it had been a movie, their scenes would have been on the cutting room floor.

Overall, you cannot go wrong with a Katie McGarry book. You simply can't. She could write a book about lawn furniture and make it romantic. She's that good. Anytime someone asks for a swoony recommendation, I immediately point them to this series.

BEA with Little, Brown

1.) How much planning goes into an event like this for you and your staff?

BEA is our biggest event of the year! Our goal is to present our upcoming books to key influencers: the people who will spread the word and increase sales at the time of the book's publication. Since attendees of BEA include all swaths of book people: booksellers, librarians, authors, agents, media, bloggers, distributors, foreign publishers, digital publishers, and now, with BookCon, consumers—anyone who pitches our books to anyone works at BEA. Marketing does the promotion, advertising, giveaways and booth experience, and Publicity does author events and entertaining. We also work closely with our Sales team to staff the booth.

2.) How would you compare BEA to other book conferences/events?

BEA is the one-stop-fits-all for all book industry folks. Other conferences usually have a more specific focus: teachers, librarians, digital publishing, bookseller trade shows, etc. BEA is where you get everything. Except a chance to take a breather! (Kidding.)

3.) Any suggestions for how bloggers/librarians should approach publishers at BEA?

The best time is when there isn't an in-booth event going on. If there's an author signing, or a big giveaway happening, the staff running the booth will primarily be focusing on that, so it will be difficult to have a conversation. Come back at a quiet time, comment at what catches your eye, and ask us questions!

4.) What advice would you offer a first time attendee?

There will always be too much to see, read, and do. Come prepared with your "musts" and go with the flow for everything else!

5.) Are there any titles from Little, Brown/Hachette you're excited will be at BEA this year?

The question is OBVIOUSLY yes! Be on the lookout for Ryan Graudin's THE WALLED CITY, which is set in the real-life, only-demolished-in-the-90s city of Kowloon, in Hong Kong. The city is almost a character in and of itself—if you think Manhattan is densely populated, you should google "Kowloon Walled City". Then come back, I'll wait.

Crazy, right? People living on top of each other, with hardly any daylight peeking through. Drugs, brothels, gangs… you name it. THE WALLED CITY features three characters with interweaving story lines and reads like a dystopian thriller, but then you realize that it was based on a real place. I've heard the editor throw around the term "histopian." Bloggers, can we make that a thing?

There are also new books by old favorites (Holly Black, A. S. King, Paolo Bacigalupi, Rebecca Serle) and new favorites (Kendall Kulper's SALT & STORM, Josh Sundquist's WE SHOULD HANG OUT SOMETIME). Come to booth #2820 and we'll tell you all about them!

BEA with Spencer Hill Press

1.) How much planning goes into an event like this for you and your staff?
We start brainstorming a year out, while we're still at BEA. We make notes for what works best and what we want to improve. But we start working out the specifics of which books and authors will be featured about six months out, since we need to make sure that the books are ready in time. It takes months of work, planning, ordering books, SWAG, and stuff for the booth. This year, Jessica Porteous, one of our senior editors, has done the lion's share of the planning. She is made of awesome.

2.) How would you compare BEA to other book conferences/events?
It's by far the biggest event of the year for us, and it is the one event we never miss.

3.) Any suggestions for how bloggers/librarians should approach publishers at BEA? (I will admit I just stood around staring at booths until someone approached me because I was shy about it.)
Attendees should bring a LOT of business cards! Please include your name, your email address, and your blog name (or the name of the library, etc.--whatever the book-related info might be). If you are interested in our books, we'd love to have a way to tell you more about them. Feel free to come up and say hi to someone in a booth--we love to talk about our books, and if you have a set question or two, such as, "Do you have any books you'd recommend for kids in junior high who don't like to read?" or "I'm a huge romance fan--am I in the right place?" we'll be happy to steer you right. Even a generic, "Do you have a mailing list?" or "What kinds of books does your company publish?" will work.
4.) What advice would you offer a first time attendee?
Bring comfortable shoes, a rolling suitcase, a bottle of water, a snack or two, and lots of business cards. Check the signing schedules and make up a list, so you don't miss the ones you really, really wanted to catch. Oh, and pack one of those external batteries to charge your cell phone--there's some kind of weird energy field in the Javits Center that drains cell batteries wicked fast.

5.) Are there any titles from Spencer Hill Press you're excited will be at BEA this year?
Thanks for asking! right now, we have the following schedule:

Fierce Reads Hits #YADC

This past weekend was spent being fierce.

OK, not that kind of fierce. This kind of Fierce:

I spent two crazy, but amazing days with the Fierce Reads authors. It kicked off on Friday night at Hooray for Books in NoVA where I joined my amazing fellow YADCers to see Gabrielle Carolina from The Mod Podge Bookshelf moderate a panel consisting of Marie Rutkoski, Katie Finn, Lindsay Smith, and Anna Banks.

Katie Finn, Lindsay Smith, Marie Rutkoski, and Anna Banks
This was a hilarious, fun-filled panel that had the entire audience cracking up. All four women are engaging and fascinating. Afterwards we did a signing and

YADC & Fierce Reads

Then it was off to dinner, YADC style (this means a lot of people, a lot of laughter and silliness, and cupcakes).

Gabrielle & me
Steph, Stacey, Jenn, Stephanie, Jess & Gabrielle
Andye & Steph
Steph & me (with complimentary horse photo bomb)
Sadly the party had to end (well, until we're all united in NYC for BEA next week), but my weekend was only half done. I had been asked to be the blogger for the Fierce Reads stop during the Gaithersburg Book Festival!

Armed with caffeine and Stephanie, I embarked on the journey to Gaithersburg. We wandered the area for a bit, popping in and out of tents before we got to catch up with our Fierce Reads authors (this time sans Marie, but with the hilarious addition of Emmy Laybourne). I had a chance to sit down and interview the authors (which I will be posting as soon as my computer stops being a butt and lets me download the file) and just chat for a bit before their panels began.

Katie, Lindsay, Anna, and Emmy Laybourne

It was a seriously amazing weekend with some fabulous women. Thank you Mary VanAkin and Ksenia Winnicki and all the other fantastic people at Macmillan who made this happen. Thank you Katie, Marie, Emmy, Anna, and Lindsay (who is now out newest YADC member!) for sharing your words and time with us. And thank you to my fellow YADC members who make everything more fun.

GIVEAWAY:

The awesome folks at Fierce Reads are letting me give away a prize pack of books to one lucky winner! Included are:

-The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski
-Sekret by Lindsay Smith

Review: The Dark World by Cara Lynn Shultz

Title: The Dark World
Author: Cara Lynn Shultz
Publisher: Harlequin TEEN
Publication Date: 5.27.2014
Pages: 304
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Young Adult
Series: Dark World #1
Source: ARC from publisher

Rating: 5 Stars

Summary (from Goodreads):
Paige Kelly is used to weird--in fact, she probably corners the market on weird, considering that her best friend, Dottie, has been dead since the 1950s. But when a fire demon attacks Paige in detention, she has to admit that things have gotten out of her league. Luckily, the cute new boy in school, Logan Bradley, is a practiced demon slayer-and he isn't fazed by Paige's propensity to chat with the dead. Suddenly, Paige is smack in the middle of a centuries-old battle between warlocks and demons, learning to fight with a magic sword so that she can defend herself. And if she makes one wrong move, she'll be pulled into the Dark World, an alternate version of our world that's overrun by demons-and she might never make it home.

Review:
This is one of those reviews where I'm going to be doing a lot of this:

And maybe some of this:

Because Logan Bradley is ....

Here I go again.

It's no secret that Cara Lynn Shultz is one of my favorite authors ever. She wowed me with her first series and when she assured me I would love Paige and Logan more than ... who was that other couple* in the first series? Well, I had my doubts. But they were quickly smashed because this book is amazing.

Shultz has a fantastic voice for storytelling. Paige is a genuine, authentic teen with a bunch of sass and a heart. Her internal ramblings cracked me up.

This book is full of high energy fun, lots of action, tons of swoony moments, and is one of the best books I've read in months. I feel like I've been waiting years for this book and I can easily read and re-read it until the next one in the series is in my hands.

It's so hard to write this review, because I just can't put into words the warm, glowy feeling this book left me with. I devoured this book. I couldn't put it down if I tried. Not that I wanted to. It's just ... Read it. Feel the magic for yourself.

*Just kidding - Paige & Logan didn't make me forget Emma & Brendan. Just gave me another couple to love.

“Mortal Enchantment spins a unique twist on elemental mythology. This series is not to be missed.” Jennifer L. Armentrout, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author
In Kalin Matthew's world, elementals control the forces of nature. They are divided into four courts: air, woodland, fire, and water. At sixteen she will leave the life she's built with her mortal mother. Kalin will move to Avalon to rule with her father—the elemental king of the air court. Along the way, she's attacked by a fire court assassin and saved by Rowan, a swoon-worthy elemental with a questionable past.

Worst of all, she learns her father is missing.
To rescue him, Kalin will have to work with a judgmental council and a system of courts too busy accusing each other of deceit to actually be able to help her. But, they aren’t her biggest challenge. With the Midwinter’s Ball only five days away, Kalin must take over her father’s duties, which includes shifting control of the elements—power Kalin has yet to realize.

BEA with HarperTeen

In case you missed it, BEA (BookExpo America) is next week.

Next freakin' week.

I am so excited to see what my favorite publishers have coming up, but to give you a tantalizing little preview, I bugged begged my friend Alison Lisnow at HarperCollins about what we could expect from their booth this year.

         1. How many years have you attended BEA?

This year will be number three! I wonder if that gets me into a secret BEA society or something…? DM me if you have info on that.

2. How do you think BEA compares to other conferences?

BEA doesn't mess around with cutsie themes. The theme is books. The other theme is America. Question answered.

3. How much planning goes into BEA for you and your coworkers?

It's no coincidence you can't spell beast without BEA. But, it's always so worth it in the end. We all look forward to it every year!

4. Any suggestions for how attendees should approach people working the booth with questions? (My first year I stood around until someone took notice on me and approached me first, LOL.)

I think we're all a pretty friendly bunch, so hey or hello is always good. I'll be your friend immediately if you compliment my eyebrows.

5. Are there any titles you're excited about from HarperCollins that will be at BEA?

Yes! So, so excited about ENDGAME by James Frey and Nils Johnson-Shelton. Endgame is coming, y'all (seriously, you have no idea how awesome this one's gonna be). Also, obviously I'm psyched for the FOUR: A DIVERGENT STORY samplers. Duh. Definitely be sure to keep an eye out for FALLING INTO PLACE, THE JEWEL, and MESSENGER OF FEAR. They are some of the biggest, baddest titles of Fall 2014, and you would be a fool to miss out on grabbing galleys. And you can quote me on that. To myself. If you come to the HarperCollins Booth (#2038 & 2039). See you there!

I know I'll be popping by the HC booth, make sure you do, too!

Blog Tour: Breakable by Tammara Webber

What prompted you to write Lucas' story? Simply put – I wrote BREAKABLE because Lucas began “speaking” to me. While I was writing EASY, I only heard Jacqueline’s voice. I was used to writing alternating POV stories (my entire BTL series alternates male/female), so writing from a single POV was new for me – but I went with it because I knew Jacqueline’s story was going to be the most important thing I’d ever write. It needed to be her story. About a year after I self-published EASY, I began to hear pieces of Landon’s story from Lucas – the lost boy he’d been before college, before Jacqueline – and I began to see EASY’s story from his perspective. At some point, I knew I had to write it. Honestly, it was Landon’s story that convinced me to do it.

A lot of readers are getting frustrated with new adult novels retelling a story from a male point of view. How does BREAKABLE differ from the rest? I haven’t read the others, with exception of LOSING HOPE (Colleen Hoover), so honestly, I don’t know for sure. I don’t think anyone has formatted an alternate POV book as I did BREAKABLE. About 30% of the book overlaps scenes from EASY. The rest is comprised of new scenes from Lucas surrounding the EASY story, and completely new material from Landon.

Whenever someone asked me for a new adult recommendation, I immediately point them to EASY. What new adult books would you recommend? Thank you! I rarely recommend books to someone unless I know their tastes. I read a lot of YA – contemporary, fantasy, dystopian. I also read non-fic, which I can put down and returned to more easily than fiction (right now, I’m reading HOW WE DIE by Sherwin Nuland). I usually suggest that people look at my Goodreads profile for recommendations – I only list books I liked. I don’t rate, and I try to write short reviews, but I’ve fallen behind in the past several months. I don’t get to read as much as I’d like now. I’m hoping that once BREAKABLE releases and the promotional activities die down, I’ll have some reading time. New authors (new to me) I’ve enjoyed in the past few months are Audrey Bell (LOVE SHOW) and Katie Kacvinsky (FIRST COMES LOVE). Both are more literary NA, which I personally love.

Is this the last we've seen of Lucas and Jacqueline? As main characters, yes. I am brainstorming and researching the possibility of writing spin-off stories for a couple of characters, however – one from EASY and one from BREAKABLE. These plans will require discussions with my agent and editors first, of course. But if they happen, readers may see L&J in very minor roles. The good thing about not being the focus of a book is there is no requirement for drama/conflict for them. The main characters must have conflict or there is no story – and that’s why I decided early on that there would be no sequel of EASY.

What books will you be taking on vacation with you this summer? I don’t anticipate a vacation this year. L Travel, for me, has become work – I’m either attending signings or doing research for the next book. I usually don’t have time to read for pleasure while traveling. Once I return from the RT Conference, I hope to carve more time for pleasure reading at home. I have a towering TBR pile. I also send my e-reader tons of samples. (I’m a huge proponent of samples! If I’m not compelled to continue reading after the first ten percent, I move to the next sample. With the amount of books out now, there is no reason to read something that doesn’t personally resonate with you as a reader. That would make reading a chore – and I’ve got plenty of chores already, thanks. ;))

Thanks so much! Thank you for having me, Hannah!

Review: Renegade by Debra Driza

Title: Renegade
Author: Debra Driza
Publisher: Katherine Tegan Books
Publication Date: 5.13.2014
Pages: 448
Genre: Young Adult, SciFi
Series: Mila 2.0 #2
Source: ARC from ALA MW

Rating: 5 Stars

Summary (from Goodreads):
There is no one left for Mila to trust. Except for a boy she barely knows.

But Hunter has no idea who—and what—Mila really is. She can’t bear to reveal her secret, even though he’s unwittingly joined her search for Richard Grady, a man who may know more details of Mila’s complicated past.

Yet the road to the truth is more dangerous than ever. With General Holland and the Vita Obscura scouring the earth for her whereabouts, Mila must rely on her newfound android abilities to protect herself and Hunter from imminent harm. Still, embracing her identity as a machine leads her to question the state of her humanity—as well as Hunter’s real motives.

Review:
Debra blew me away with the first Mila and I could only imagine how awesome the second would be. She did not disappoint!

Mila is still by far my favorite girl. After finding out your not human and your life this far has been lies, you tend to not trust anyone.  I love being with her through her journey to find herself. She is strong and brilliant. At the same time she is naïve and falls into the teenage heart. She is slow to trust and it almost cost her her life. Debra gives you so much of Mila that I could certainly see us being friends. She has so much depth in personality and insight into her mind that you begin to think like her. I caught myself a few times telling her what to do with her abilities before she actually did them.

There is so much adventure. It's a constant roller coaster once she meets up with Hunter. There are sparks of hope, love, betrayal and friendship. You are constantly on your toes and hold your breath just make yourself feel better. I couldn't put this down.

This had to be the best worst ending I have ever read. Talk about a major cliff hanger!!!  It was like oh shit and oh no all at once at the same time. I cannot wait for the next Mila. And I know I will love it just as much as this one.
